The measurement and evaluation of honing structures

Because of the continuously increasing requirements due to new Euro standards one reaches limits regarding the conventional manufacture of surfaces featuring low friction and at the same time reduced oil consumption.

The amplitudes of the micro structure are becoming smaller and apart from their manufacture also the quality control isn’t getting simpler. Roughness values around 200 nm require the strict reduction of vibrations which seems only possible by reducing the measurement loop size.

Whereas the Rk parameters as measured with stylus based instruments are now as before the measure of all things in order to assess the roughness of a honed surface the surface structure and it’s functional behaviour more likely cannot to be described by this method. An essential step forward to a progressive assessment of the honing structure has been made by the Daimler company standard MBN 37800. The  assessment of statistically distributed surface areas and establishment of new parameters the usefulness of which have been certified by test runs describe the functional behaviour of honed running faces to the best of current technical knowledge.

The BMT stylus based roughness measurement technology meets the requirements of fast and statistically relevant in-line quality control providing at the same time a clear documentation of the surface conditions and also provides a trend projection directly after the honing process.  To this end the modular MiniProfiler instrument family was developed. It lends itself in an ideal manner for the roughness measurement following the production cycle and at the same time being very cost effective. This is accomplished by features like a verey small measurement loop, stylus retraction, reference datum, USB interface, large range and high resolution and workpiece specific adapters.

BMT interferometers for an area micro structure measurement, also on the shop floor adjacent to the honing tool represent the industry standard and lend themselves ideally for the data evaluation according to the Daimler standard MBN37800.

The combination of stylus based and optical measurements and possibly the optical scanning of the entire running surface of engine cylinders and liners represents the most advanced quality control standard in engine production.
